One Platform to Rule Them All

I’m genuinely baffled why so many people seem convinced that we’ll find or come up with One Platform to Rule Them All — one place that suits absolutely everyone’s needs, is a great fit for all types of fanworks, fandom debates and non-fandom conversations, and is outside the regulatory reach of many goverments’ increasingly hostile changes.

That...is not a thing. That really cannot reasonably be a thing. It’s hard enough to strive towards that for “just” a fanworks archive—and heaven knows literally nothing about AO3 is unanimously liked—but social media? People have extremely different needs for conversation.

And diversity makes us stronger. Not trusting one basket—however much we love it—with all our eggs makes us resilient as a community. [personal profile] ardwynna’s post here makes this point very well.

So I’m sure wherever we go, it won’t be just one place, and it won’t be all at once. Even just the small subset of fandom that is “Tumblr fandom” is already also scattered in various other places, too. It’ll be messy, and it won’t be painless. But we’ll make it through. We always have before \o/

This feels nostalgic, to say the least

[profile] pearwardorf mentioned Maciej Ceglowski (the Pinboard Guy) in a tweet about fandom's current platform woes, and he asked—no promises, obviously—to see a doc with a consensus spec of what we'd like. This brings back a lot of great memories of the last time Maciej did that, right after Delicious exploded, and the doc that that led to. Also relevant: Maciej's great "Fan is a Tool-Using Animal" talk.

(Mandatory caveat: Don't assume anyone's riding in on a white horse to save us, fix everything forever and suddenly give us the perfect platform on a platter. There's no such thing. Don't put all your hopes on this one dude in California. We know better.)

Come along and take a look at what the Google doc looks like so far! (Right now, it's a mess. In a few hours, who knows?)

Is this thing on?

Okay, Dreamwidth account paid up again, profile updated, now off to find people from other social media on DW. I never actually did the thing properly here—I'd already lost the habit of making posts regularly by the time DW came along—but let's give this a try. I promise I'll do my best to read and comment, even if I don't post all that much myself.

If I know you from elsewhere, give me a shout :D

Yuletide 2018

Hi, mystery author!

Thank you for signing up for these fandoms! :D They each made this dumpster fire of a year a little better for me, and I'm glad you enjoy them too. I have done my best to come up with helpful ideas that would not be overly detailed or constraining, but please feel free to go 100% Optional Details Are Optional regarding anything and everything in the prompts below. If these canons inspire you to write something in a totally different direction, I'll be delighted to read it.

Things I love: UST, banter, angsty and/or fucked-up characters and interactions, clever characters actually being clever, open relationships and/or interesting poly dynamics, found families, awesome female characters, unusual worldbuilding, dubcon, infidelity, kidfic, domesticity, post-break-up second chances, fake relationship, hatesex, denial/delay, voyeurism, pining, and soulbonds.

I love short PWPs and long plotty fics alike; go for any tense, rating and genre you prefer. I'm equally happy with gen and shippy fic. Feel free to go full-on AU if you wish, or to stick closely to canon; I'll never mind either way. Also, regarding ships: I'm a multishipper at heart and will never be unhappy about your shipping choices, no matter what you go for.

Things I dislike: gratuitous character bashing, 'making love,' 'cum,' watersports, scat, rape as plot device to lead to h/c.

In case you happen to want to poke around my accounts, have at it: [pinboard.in profile] christycorr; [archiveofourown.org profile] christycorr; [twitter.com profile] christycorr; [tumblr.com profile] christycorr.

Dear Yuletide Author

Hello! Thank you so much for volunteering to write these fandoms—I'm going to be really giddy with anything you come up with, so don't worry. All my requests are more like guidelines; Optional Details Are Optional all the way, feel free to write something else if you get an idea you're excited about. I'll list some likes/dislikes below in case that helps, but please don't feel you need to include any of it, and feel free to disregard it all, too, if it works for your story. If you have a good time writing it, I'll enjoy reading it!

In Other Lands - Sarah Rees Brennan )

The Broken Earth - N. K. Jemisin )

Love for the Cold-Blooded - Alex Gabriel )

Note in case you want to check out a fandom other than the one we matched on, sorted by length: Love for the Cold-Blooded is one book, a short and fast read, rather silly; In Other Lands is also one book, though longer, that takes all kinds of fantasy tropes and twists them in hilarious ways; The Broken Earth is a trilogy, far heavier than the other two in subject matter, but worth every second.

Whatever you choose, thank you so much for writing this! I hope you have a good time. And as I said up there: please feel free to disregard my suggestions if the mood strikes and you have a different burst of inspiration.

Dear Yuletide Author

Hi, Mystery Author!

First of all—don't worry, I'm very easy fic-wise, and if you're writing any of these fandoms, I'm already happy. All my suggestions are 100% 'Optional Details Are Optional' territory, and if anything completely different strikes you, go for it! If you enjoy writing it, I'll definitely have a great time reading it.

I'm listing some of my top likes and dislikes below, but please consider these more like vague guidelines—you're welcome to disregard them if the mood strikes you, and please don't feel that you need to include any of these at all. I'm just trying to help. :D

Favourites: UST, witty banter, fucked-up characters and interactions, clever characters actually being clever, open relationships and/or interesting poly dynamics, awesome female characters, any and all geeky references, dubcon, infidelity, kidfic, domesticity, post-break-up, fake relationship, hatesex, denial/delay, voyeurism, pining, and soulbonds.

I'll be happy to get fluff or angst, gen or PWP, plotty or slice of life. I love canon and AU settings equally; if you bend canon in an interesting way, I'll love you forever, and if you get me a missing or future scene that fits just right, I'll be squeeing until New Year's. Crossovers, fusions, movie AUs are all totally fine, too! Seriously, I wasn't kidding with the easy thing.

In case you happen to want to dig around my accounts to find out anything: [pinboard.in profile] christycorr; [archiveofourown.org profile] christycorr; [twitter.com profile] christycorr; [tumblr.com profile] christycorr.

Please avoid: the word 'lover' (I just have a thing, okay, I hate it totally irrationally), 'making love,' 'cum,' gratuitous character bashing, watersports, scat, graphic non-con, rape as plot device to lead to h/c, first person POV.

Cruel Intentions (1999)

What if it had been Kathryn, not Sebastian, who set out to seduce Annette? Or what if Sebastian had decided to claim his reward after all? Or hey, maybe an OT3 is in order. Or Annette had been masterfully playing them all along. Or maybe Kathryn has fucked off to Europe and is now sending them terrible letters to mock their life choices.

Cruel Intentions toys a lot with how much everyone in it lies and how unreliable its own tale is, and it could be really fun to read something that plays with that, with how partial a story we got. Basically, I enjoy the hell out of this movie and the character dynamics in it, and would be over the moon with either gen or any permutation of the three main characters you’d prefer, in any genre whatsoever.

V for Vendetta (2005)

I love this film, and it would be great to read your take on any of its minor characters. The tag set has Dominic Stone, Valerie and Ruth—any of those would be brilliant. If you want to talk about what led Stone to join the Yard, or scenes from Valerie and Ruth’s lives together, go for it! You could do Valerie or Ruth on their own, growing up; or surviving, in a better reality, if you like. Valerie imprisoned would be fascinating, if angst is your up of tea! If you want to try a different character altogether, you could go for Deitrich or Delia, too; explore him building his collection, perhaps, or her crisis of conscience. Up to you!

Six Feet Under

Brenda Chenowith

There are so many things you could write about Brenda that would make melt in a puddle of Yuletide glee. A snippet of Charlotte Light and Dark; a glimpse into tiny!Brenda's life as she struggles with being the subject of observation by a plethora of shrinks and learns to react to the attention in her own way; anything about how her relationship with Billy developed throughout the years, and how they built their personalities messy and entangled with each other; how she grew into herself and tried to leave Charlotte and her parents behind; what it felt like to meet Nate and to be drawn to a guy like that, to develop feelings for him, to be betrayed by him, to let herself get involved with him again, to lose him; her point of view about her struggles with sex and intimacy and commitment and all sorts of things; her perspective on the Fishers and their many different flavours of fucked-up; her life post-series, her career, her second marriage, her family.

Seriously, any of the above, and countless others besides. Brenda is the kind of character that causes so much to happen onscreen that it can be hard to remember that there's even more happening purely inside her head. It would be great to read what you think was happening at any point in time—please feel free to make it sad, or funny, or romantic, or twisted, or pensive, or all of the above.

tl;dr: I ramble way too much, probably offered too many idea tidbits in my attempts to be helpful (sorry!), but don't worry—I'll definitely be happy with what you write. Thanks in advance, and happy Yuletiding!

Dear Yuletide Author

Hi, Yulegoat!

Thank you so much for volunteering for any of my fandoms. You're brilliant and clearly have amazing taste :D Trust me, I'll be beyond giddy to read anything you write based on any canon here—take into account anything I suggest as if there were a blaring red display saying 'Optional Details Are Optional' above every single prompt.

I'm generally quite easy to please ficwise—there's very little I absolutely won't read, and I'm sure I'll enjoy anything you come up with! I'll list some of my favourite tropes and some of the things I dislike the most below, but please consider these more like vague guidelines—please disregard any and all of my preferences if the mood strikes you.

Things I adore: UST, witty banter, fucked-up characters and interactions, clever characters actually being clever, open relationships and/or interesting poly dynamics, awesome female characters, any and all geeky references, dubcon, infidelity, kidfic, domesticity, post-break-up, fake relationship, hatesex, denial/delay, voyeurism and soulbonds. I'm really big on shameless idfic! Feel free to include kink of any kind. I'm not picky—if you think it's hot, sell me on it!

I'm open to as much or as little angst or fluff as you wish. Quick and dirty PWP is awesome; plotty longfic is equally awesome. I love AUs, all kinds—from porn to coffeeshop, dentist to utterly cracktastic. Canon settings are amazing, too! I love genfic, het, femmeslash, slash and otherfic alike; any of those, or any combination thereof, in any rating, will be very welcome! If you do something unorthodox with the story format, I may just love you forever and ever. In case you're like me and want to dig around my accounts everywhere: [pinboard.in profile] christycorr; [archiveofourown.org profile] christycorr; [twitter.com profile] christycorr; [tumblr.com profile] christycorr.

Things I dislike: the word 'lover' (seriously, I cannot stress this enough), 'making love,' 'cum,' gratuitous character bashing, watersports/scat, graphic non-con, rape as plot device to lead to h/c, daddy kink. First-person narration is not my favourite, but if you must, that's okay.

House of Cards

Claire Underwood

I find Claire utterly fascinating—how ruthless, clever and vulnerable she is, how determined yet adaptable she's made herself to be. I'd be thrilled to see anything that explores how she constructed herself to become who she now is; how much of that process was deliberate; what she had to leave behind and the challenges she faced along the way.

If you're amenable to writing an AU, I'd love a snippet of a world where Claire is in Frank's place. She's the congresswoman—the one dealing with the betrayal of being shoved aside for Secretary of State, or setting precarious dominoes in place to become President, or any of the multiple crises we see in the show.

Claire and Frank's relationship—feel free to include Meechum, if you like! And/or talk about Adam, that's great too!—and the way they negotiate their lives around and through each other are hands down my favourite things about this show, so if you want to write something about that, I'd be over the moon.

Just, essentially: Claire Claire Claire, in any setting, at any point in time, with or without anyone, just show me Claire being Claire and I'll love you forever.

Six Feet Under

Brenda Chenowith

BRENDA. The most fucked-up and amazing and brilliant, I adore her forever and always ♥

There are so many things you could write about Brenda that would make melt in a puddle of Yuletide glee!

Sweep - Cate Tiernan

Ciaran MacEwan, Maeve Riordan

I would really love to know more about is Ciaran MacEwan. I don't mean you need to justify any of the absolutely horrible things he's done—I like him just as awful as he is in canon, with his backwards reasonings for all the crap he's pulled—but he's fascinating nonetheless, and his relationship with Maeve sounds like it could have been brilliant, if unhealthy.

This pairing pushes all my buttons for fucked-up dynamics, and I would really love to see more of them somehow—a slight AU, or a missing moment that we didn't get to see in the series. Maeve standing up to Ciaran, or succumbing to Ciaran; Ciaran luring Maeve to the dark side, or Maeve curbing Ciaran's worst habits—or both of them finding some middle ground out of sheer need to be together no matter what.

Jack and Bobby

Jack McCallister, Bobby McCallister

This show, I just—I love it so. ♥ These two break my heart, and Bobby is so insanely adorable and smart. I'd love to see them interact at college, or even later: Bobby nagging Jack to run for office; or a snapshot of the McCallisters' family life as adult; or simply Jack watching his brother grow into the great man he eventually became. Anything centred on either brother—or both—would make me ridiculously happy.

The idea of the two brothers interacting at college—or as adults, whatever—makes me unbelievably giddy. J&B remains to this day one of my most beloved cancelled shows. I adored the character development and the family dynamics so much. Watching Bobby learn how to deal with life, watching how Jack's character shaped him and was shaped by him, witnessing the two brothers' bond grow stronger and their becoming true friends in addition to just family. So yes: if you choose to write this fic, please give me a snapshot (or several! :D) of their lives post-series, at whichever time you prefer. I'd be very happy with a character study of either brother at any point in time, too, if that's more your cup of tea.

Yuletide!

I'm in Berlin with [livejournal.com profile] wendybarrie_, my dad and brothers for Christmas! I've been in Germany for a couple of weeks now, and it's been brilliant to spend time with a very pregnant [personal profile] oxymora (who, incidentally, wrote and posted a Yuletide fic despite the fact that her due date was on December 21 *salutes*) and the lovely [livejournal.com profile] latenightcuppa :D But seriously, Berlin, it was snowing three days ago, wtf is up with the sudden warmth killing the white-Christmas vibe. *glares*

Yuletide is live! There are so many brilliant fics all over the place this year—I don't know if it's even more than usual or if it just seems that way, but I've been unable to tear myself away from my computer all morning, because oh my God, I love fandom so much ♥ ♥ Though my recipients haven't read their fics yet? Apparently? I hope? :( *bites lip* *tries not to fret*

ANYWAY. FUCK YEAH YULETIDE. I've been spamming fic recs over at [twitter.com profile] ficrecs, but here are three of my favourites so far!

First of all, my perfect, amazing, seriously-everything-I-ever-wanted, no-really-mystery-author-are-you-secretly-a-mind-reader-or-something giftfic:

[Bandits] After the Gold Rush (post-movie, Joe/Kate/Terry)
It's the three of them slowly working around each other and negotiating their OT3ness, and just, oh my God, it's so brilliant, and so wonderfully in character!

And then two heavily meta fics, because yesss:

[Fandom RPF] The Velociraptor Diaries
Where do I begin. Suffice to say, any fic that includes this line: "(Marx: if remember right from ancient history lecture, was briefly popular fiction writer of family values and industrialization stories, also part of comedy trio -- others in trio may have been Freud and Jung Werther, also focused on alienation and production of family structures? -- but Marx's societal critique never took off in a big way, except for "North and South" which was adapted multiple times.)" needs no introduction. Basically: if you've ever been in fandom, read this.

[AO3 Tags Anthropomorfic] The Bar at the End of Fandom
This fic represents the very best thing about Yuletide. It's no secret that I have all the feelings about tagging, and this, THIS. Guys. Seriously. I love the imagery, I love the concepts, and it's beyond hilarious. ♥ ♥

In short: MOTHERFUCKING YULETIDE IS UPON US. YAY. ♥

Happy Yuletide/holidays/Just Another Day in December/whatever, everyone!

Fic exchanges ahoy!

I just realised I didn't post any of the fics I wrote for last year's holiday exchanges here! Uh, oops. I wrote more during the month of December than I did in years. So strange—but fun! A bit of everything—one gen, one slash, one femmeslash. (Het? What's het? :D)

Poor [personal profile] firstlightofeos—who, incidentally, wrote a brilliant Giselle/Nancy Enchanted fic for Yuletide called No Prince Charming—had to do way more betaing and handholding than usual. Sorry, darling. ♥

Anyhow, better late than ever:

For Yuletide:
Blood Will Out (gen, PG-13, 3,380 words)

Fandom: Practical Magic (1998)

Warnings: none

Summary: Magic cannot heal all wounds—that's what family's for.

For [community profile] 3_ships:
Right to War (Mystique/Jean/Storm, NC-17, 8,210 words)

Fandom: X-Men movies/XMFC

Warnings: none

Summary: Mystique used to be on a righteous mission to uncover and thwart Stryker's plans against mutantkind—and then somehow she ended up stuck in a jet with a dangerously unstable Jean Grey and a surprisingly aggressive Storm. This was not her finest day.

For [livejournal.com profile] suits_exchange:
Special Hell (Harvey/Mike, Steve/Tony, R, 7,260 words)

Fandom: Suits/The Avengers

Warnings: slight D/s undertones, dirty talk

Summary: Harvey Specter was willing to do many questionable things for the sake of a client as high-profile as Tony Stark—but he drew the line at attending a costume party with Mike Ross as his date.

There. :D

Yuletide!

Happy holidays, everyone!

I'm in Dublin with [livejournal.com profile] wendybarrie_ at the moment, marathoning Christmas-themed TV episodes from all sorts of defunct shows in my hotel room while reading Yuletide fics—it's by far the least complicated and headachy holiday season I've ever experienced, and I love it.

GUYS. I just got an amazing fic for Yuletide—I'm so happy! The fandom is The Three Musketeers, a book I've adored since I was a kid. It's Athos-centric angst, and it's fantastic ♥ Check it out!

My prompter liked her gift fic, too, so yay! :DD

I've been spamming Yuletide recs over at @ficrecs, incidentally; there's so much good stuff this year!

Also, LiveJournal's at it again, huh? There must be so much good fic lost with this new comment deletion spree D: Goddamn it. Thank goodness for Pinboard archiving, I guess. *sighs*

Dear Yulegoat,

Thank you so much for participating in this year's Yuletide! I hope you didn't hate my requests on sight—rest assured I'll adore anything you write based on the characters I asked for. I'm not hard to please, promise :D

So, in general:

I adore: good characterisation, AUs of any kind (and crossovers! Love those!), excessive UST, witty banter, clever characters actually being clever, complex plots, sarcasm, open relationships and/or interesting poly dynamics, awesome female characters, geeky references of any kind, drunkenness, domesticity, adultery and kidfic. [you can find fics I love at my pinboard account, if you wish]

I really, really dislike: the word "lover" (seriously, I cannot stress this enough), "making love," "cum," character bashing, graphic non-con. I'm also not a big fan of incest.

If you want to write any of these as an AU or a crossover, I'll absolutely love it ♥

Now, on to the specific prompts: )

I know very well that optional details are optional, Mystery Writer, and once again, rest assured that I'll greatly enjoy your fic, no matter what you choose to write! Feel free to depart from my requests if a stray plot bunny leads you astray—I won't mind one bit! :D

Once again, thank you so much for this! ♥ ♥

Hi! First of all, thank you so much for writing this for me. This is my first year taking part in [community profile] 3_ships, and I'm very excited!

In case you want to know more about my likes and dislikes, here's a list to guide you:

These are a few of my favourite things: AUs of any kind (and crossovers), open relationships and/or interesting poly dynamics, excessive UST, witty banter, clever characters actually being clever, sarcasm, awesome female characters, geeky references of any kind, drunkenness, domesticity, adultery, kidfic, and, in the case of XMFC, telepathy and characters using their powers irresponsibly/casually.

Things I really, really dislike: "lover," "making love," "cum," character bashing, graphic non-con.

If you want, you can browse my pinboard to check out the kind of fics I enjoy the most.

Feel free to leave an anon comment here (or send my friend [livejournal.com profile] firstlightofeos a message, if that suits you better) if you have anything to ask! :D

I couldn't care less about Christmas itself, but this year's Yuletide was all kinds of exciting!

My Yulegoat wrote me a time to refrain from embracing, a lovely Kings futurefic featuring pining!Jack and jaded!David—what more could I possibly want? Thank you so much, mystery author! ♥

I have a bazillion windows open with all the fics and links I ignored over the past few days while hiding under my Yuletide-shaped rock—but I'm I won't get to touch them any time soon because NEW DOCTOR WHO OMG.

While (VERY IMPATIENTLY) waiting for my download to finish, I shall read more Yuletide fics. I doubt I'll post recs here on LJ, but if you have Twitter, check out @ficrecs; I'll probably update it pretty frequently over the next few days!
