One Platform to Rule Them All
Dec. 7th, 2018 04:35 pmI’m genuinely baffled why so many people seem convinced that we’ll find or come up with One Platform to Rule Them All — one place that suits absolutely everyone’s needs, is a great fit for all types of fanworks, fandom debates and non-fandom conversations, and is outside the regulatory reach of many goverments’ increasingly hostile changes.
That...is not a thing. That really cannot reasonably be a thing. It’s hard enough to strive towards that for “just” a fanworks archive—and heaven knows literally nothing about AO3 is unanimously liked—but social media? People have extremely different needs for conversation.
And diversity makes us stronger. Not trusting one basket—however much we love it—with all our eggs makes us resilient as a community.
ardwynna’s post here makes this point very well.
So I’m sure wherever we go, it won’t be just one place, and it won’t be all at once. Even just the small subset of fandom that is “Tumblr fandom” is already also scattered in various other places, too. It’ll be messy, and it won’t be painless. But we’ll make it through. We always have before \o/
