christycorr: Mr. Darcy (Pride and Prejudice) (Fanfiction is difficult!)
I just realised I didn't post any of the fics I wrote for last year's holiday exchanges here! Uh, oops. I wrote more during the month of December than I did in years. So strange—but fun! A bit of everything—one gen, one slash, one femmeslash. (Het? What's het? :D)

Poor [personal profile] firstlightofeos—who, incidentally, wrote a brilliant Giselle/Nancy Enchanted fic for Yuletide called No Prince Charming—had to do way more betaing and handholding than usual. Sorry, darling. ♥

Anyhow, better late than ever:

For Yuletide:
Blood Will Out (gen, PG-13, 3,380 words)

Fandom: Practical Magic (1998)

Warnings: none

Summary: Magic cannot heal all wounds—that's what family's for.

For [community profile] 3_ships:
Right to War (Mystique/Jean/Storm, NC-17, 8,210 words)

Fandom: X-Men movies/XMFC

Warnings: none

Summary: Mystique used to be on a righteous mission to uncover and thwart Stryker's plans against mutantkind—and then somehow she ended up stuck in a jet with a dangerously unstable Jean Grey and a surprisingly aggressive Storm. This was not her finest day.

For [livejournal.com profile] suits_exchange:
Special Hell (Harvey/Mike, Steve/Tony, R, 7,260 words)

Fandom: Suits/The Avengers

Warnings: slight D/s undertones, dirty talk

Summary: Harvey Specter was willing to do many questionable things for the sake of a client as high-profile as Tony Stark—but he drew the line at attending a costume party with Mike Ross as his date.

There. :D
christycorr: Mr. Darcy (Pride and Prejudice) (Fanfiction is difficult!)
Thank you so much for participating in this year's Yuletide! I hope you didn't hate my requests on sight—rest assured I'll adore anything you write based on the characters I asked for. I'm not hard to please, promise :D

So, in general:

I adore: good characterisation, AUs of any kind (and crossovers! Love those!), excessive UST, witty banter, clever characters actually being clever, complex plots, sarcasm, open relationships and/or interesting poly dynamics, awesome female characters, geeky references of any kind, drunkenness, domesticity, adultery and kidfic. [you can find fics I love at my pinboard account, if you wish]

I really, really dislike: the word "lover" (seriously, I cannot stress this enough), "making love," "cum," character bashing, graphic non-con. I'm also not a big fan of incest.

If you want to write any of these as an AU or a crossover, I'll absolutely love it ♥

Now, on to the specific prompts: )

I know very well that optional details are optional, Mystery Writer, and once again, rest assured that I'll greatly enjoy your fic, no matter what you choose to write! Feel free to depart from my requests if a stray plot bunny leads you astray—I won't mind one bit! :D

Once again, thank you so much for this! ♥ ♥
*bounces*!

[livejournal.com profile] 2naonh3_cl2 made a podfic of my Kings fic Sacrifice! Eee, this is so unbelievably awesome ♥ ♥ She did a brilliant job! Download the mp3 here. (44.87 MB)

In other news, I'm not one for episode reaction posts, but I'm totally in love with the Eleventh Doctor and Amelia Pond—I adored ickle!Amelia, and the food-tasting, and Liz Ten, and the Smilers, and the moral dilemma; and God, I so did not expect to grow fond of a new Doctor this quickly—even if 503 was pretty boring. But anyway, it's Daleks, again, and "Would you like some tea?" is second only to "You are better at dying!" (well, and arguably "You would make a good Dalek") in the Best Dalek Lines Ever department. Thank you for not disappointing, Moffat, and it's SO GREAT to have new episodes every week that I haven't quite stopped flailing yet :DDD
I signed up for two [livejournal.com profile] reel_merlin fics, because I'm SUICIDAL. Wtf, self? I barely read Merlin fic anymore! FML.

Here's a meme stolen from [livejournal.com profile] _thirty2flavors, because it's 10 PM and I'm bored in class, and no one should be allowed to have Commercial Law class at 10 PM on a Friday.

Name three fics you think I will never, ever, ever write. In return, I will attempt to write a snippet of one of them.

Do your worst! :D
christycorr: Dash (The Incredibles) (*Squee!*)
I couldn't care less about Christmas itself, but this year's Yuletide was all kinds of exciting!

My Yulegoat wrote me a time to refrain from embracing, a lovely Kings futurefic featuring pining!Jack and jaded!David—what more could I possibly want? Thank you so much, mystery author! ♥

I have a bazillion windows open with all the fics and links I ignored over the past few days while hiding under my Yuletide-shaped rock—but I'm I won't get to touch them any time soon because NEW DOCTOR WHO OMG.

While (VERY IMPATIENTLY) waiting for my download to finish, I shall read more Yuletide fics. I doubt I'll post recs here on LJ, but if you have Twitter, check out @ficrecs; I'll probably update it pretty frequently over the next few days!
Star Trek XI fic rec: So Wise We Grow, [livejournal.com profile] captanddeastar's [livejournal.com profile] startrekbigbang fic (eventual Kirk/Spockm 81,000 words, R). It's kid!fic—Spock finds himself having to parent, with Kirk's help, the son T'Pring left behind—and it's all kinds of adorable.

So! Christmas cards! (Again, not hand-made, because I fail at arts-and-crafts-ness.) Drop me a note if you want one, and I'll do my best to mail them at some point before December 25th.

[Note to newcomers: I've yet to manage to meet this deadline. Extrapolating from my last few years' Christmas-card-sending attempts, I'd say you're likely to receive your card in mid-January. I apologise in advance.]

Comments are screened.

We've had consistent 100F+ weather for the past few days, and I am melting. MELTING. Weather gods, I am so displeased. My computer's overheating so much it's uncomfortable to type. Ugh.

Yuletide sign-ups are now open! I haven't decided which fandoms I'll pick, but go volunteer! Also, UR.org's yearly Christmas Fic Exchange has just opened sign-ups, too. *nudges* How about some HP fic nostalgia, eh? Go join! ♥

Meme!

Post a list of 10 television shows you watch or have watched. Have your friends list guess your favourite character from each show. When someone guesses your favourite character, bold the title. When guessed, tell us why you like that character.

Here you go:

1. Doctor Who
2. How I Met Your Mother
3. Six Feet Under
4. Merlin
5. Firefly
6. Buffy
7. Numb3rs
8. Chuck
9. Leverage
10. True Blood

I'd offer shows like Castle, Alias, Dexter, Dollhouse, Rome, Boston Legal, Gilmore Girls, House, Scrubs, Supernatural, Pushing Daisies, Star Trek (TOS) and Heroes as options, but my favourite characters in each and every one are so obvious (and obviously awesome) that really, it's kind of pointless.

Star Trek XI fic rec: [livejournal.com profile] waldorph's √π233/hy7 series. Don't let the Math-y name scare you off! It starts off with an AU loosely based on the movie Good Will Hunting, in which Jim is dragged to Starfleet Academy after Spock finds out he's a bit of a Maths wiz kid, but it's so much more than that—every one-shot that followed is narrated from the point of view of a different character (Winona, Uhura, Sam, T'Pring, Sulu, Frank, Sarek, etc.), following his or her life in that 'verse. Most of them can be read as stand-alones, if Kirk/Spock isn't your thing. I'm especially fond of the T'Pring one-shot.

Also, I turn 22 today. Yay for getting old! And happy belated birthday to [livejournal.com profile] keshi_t, who is exactly one year and 36 hours older than me :D
I spent the last few days judging Romance and NC-17 fics for the Hourglass Awards. Two things:

1) I'm astonished at how normal most of the sex in Harry Potter fanfiction is. Sure, there are plenty of squicky/strange/Squid-related fics out there, but for the most part it's just very, very normal sex, with the occasional contraceptive charm or conjured lube or simply misused motor oil. After spending the last few weeks immersed in pon farr/touch telepathy fic, it all just seems insanely straightforward. Not that it's a bad thing or anything, but I kept half-waiting for people to meld, or someone's eyes to turn golden and make shit explode.

2) I dislike most sappy NC-17 fics, but good God, overly sappy Sirius/Remus fics annoy me more than sap in pretty much any other ship. I don't mean the cute, clichéd, shit-we-had-inadvisable-drunken-sex-and-I-realised-I've-been-in-love-with-you-all-along kind; it's the "I wuv you, Siri-poo" ones that make me want to claw my fucking eyes out. Ugh.

I'm ridiculously excited for U2's new tour—their first concert was full of hiccoughs (e.g. they failed spectacularly at One and With or Without You, which they've been playing for years), but they seem to have sorted themselves out, and things are looking good! They even played Electrical Storm twice! (Well, except for that godawful I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight remix. What are they thinking?)

I'm on holidays, which is totally brilliant :D I'm in São Paulo for the HBP release, and I've been hanging out with friends whom I rarely see, so yay!

Gah. I've been reading too much Harry Potter fic. I miss Star Trek and Merlin. *twitches* Withdrawal. Seriously. God, this is sad.

In other news, I'm completely in love with the icon I used to make this post.
christycorr: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Merlin's saggy left--)
When you see this, post five seven unpopular fandom opinions in your journal.

1. [Doctor Who] I adore Steven Moffat and all his DW episodes (except for the fourth season two-parter, because no amount of fangirlism can get me to appreciate River), so I'm actually curious to see what he'll do with Eleven. I'll miss Tennant like hell, but I'll definitely give the next series a chance.

2. [Torchwood] I hate Torchwood. I've watched several episodes, and I should like it, really—I love Jack, and James Marsters was in it, even, I should've been all over that, but...no. The team fails, and even Jack fails, and Owen fails, and Gwen fails oh God, so hard, and the plotlines are ridiculous, and they're all amazingly inefficient and terrible at their jobs, and just, what the hell were you high on when you allowed this to happen, RTD?

Harry Potter, Star Trek, Merlin, et al. )

I signed up to write two [livejournal.com profile] reel_merlin fics: Laws of Attraction and Imagine Me & You. *headdesk* I think it's a masochism thing. But hey, I have until September—I may actually finish them, who knows?

Oh, and just because it's being debated everywhere: Michael Jackson died. The rumour outbreak broke the internet—including, but not limited to, LJ, Twitter, E! and CNN. I'm pretty sure [livejournal.com profile] ohnotheydidnt did the LJ-breaking; the comm was inaccessible for a while before the whole site crashed down. Damn, I really wanted to read people's comments on the matter. Way to go, ONTD!

I feel sorry for the bazillion people who bought tickets for his 'This Is It' 2010 tour, anyhow. The man's musical talent was respect-worthy regardless of personal taste, even if his private life was a godawful mess.
(PSA: Guys, [livejournal.com profile] sarahtales' LJ—most of you remember her as the Drop Dead Gorgeous author—was hacked, just like [personal profile] copperbadge's and [livejournal.com profile] shoebox_project. As usual, all her entries were deleted; don't click on the links you see there.)

And just because I do this every year:

Happy Towel Day! (Alas, not a Thursday this year.)

Also, happy Lilac Day! The happy folks over at [livejournal.com profile] howdotheyrise have started their celebration already, and I find myself dying to reread Night Watch—I haven't done that since the release of Half Blood Prince, which was when I bought the damned thing; I read half the book while waiting in line. (My first Pratchett. *tear*)

Random links of the day:

1) I'm On A Ship (I'm on a Boat, Star Trek XI-style). Made of win.

2) Extended Serenity gag reel, which for some reason or another I found myself watching, like, 15 different times this week. And quoting extensively. All the time. It's funnier if you've seen the movie, or if you like Nathan Fillion, but it's also pretty damn funny if you haven't, and if you're a sad, deprived soul who has no idea who the man is. If that is the case, watch this and remedy this fortunately curable condition as soon as possible.

3) Ickle Twilight/Buffy crossover, with a bonus Something Blue reference. *grins* I was linked to it from this [livejournal.com profile] fanficrants rant, which definitely deserves a click all on its own.

4) I've set up a fanfiction recs Twitter account here. As you can imagine, it's mostly Merlin and Harry Potter, but there are a couple of other fandoms there somewhere.

(I don't have the patience to do the awesome reasons-for-reccing thing that [personal profile] afterthree did at Coffee and Chocolate, and that [personal profile] thirty2flavors and [personal profile] inksplotched did at [livejournal.com profile] atasteof, but I do have too many fic links bookmarked—so yay for Twitter's 140-character limit!)

Oh, there's lots of Star Trek, too. Obviously.

This fandom is taking over my life, guys, it's not even funny. I think I've said this about far too many fandoms way too many times. I'm downloading all the movies and all the series while impatiently waiting for the remastered DVDs to come out in Brazil (May 27th!). *sighs* This is my brain on Trek. THEY HAVE PON FARR, PEOPLE. How can a fandom that has an official name for AMTDI fic not be awesome?
christycorr: Tenth Doctor (Doctor Who) (This is how I roll.)
I'm a big fan of character-driven fiction. It's not that I think plot is unimportant, but it's secondary—a plot has to be truly dazzling to make me ignore severely underdeveloped characters. (Lord of the Rings anyone?)

So yeah, character-centric > plot-centric. This applies to movies, TV series, books, fanfiction, you name it. I'd take Closer over Catch Me If You Can (and Havemercy over City of Bones, and Dexter over Alias, and Drop Dead Gorgeous over Draco Sinister) any day. Shit, I just fandom-dated myself really badly by mentioning that fic, didn't I.

By 'character-centric,' I don't mean plotless—it's mostly that the plot exists to push along the character development, and not the other way around.

Issues of the Week, BSG, genfic and Dollhouse )

Just to clarify, I don't consider 'plot-driven' an insult or anything. Nevertheless, I do believe bad writers don't try to write character-centric stories nearly as often as they do plot-driven ones (maybe it's easier to settle for the latter, because plot-driven fiction is the norm, and to part with that you need a firmer crafting hand, to have at least some idea of what you're doing? I'm not sure).

...And then Stephenie Meyer comes along with a primarily character-driven universe that has little to no plot or character development for at least 70% of any given book in the series, and I...I don't even know what to do with that.

Anyhow! I've rambled on for long enough. Do any of you guys have a preference? Is this a distinction that matters to you—in published fiction, fanfiction, or TV?

(Unrelated: Geek pride ftw!)
christycorr: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Canon dom!Remus.)
When I first joined the Harry Potter fandom, I was kind of insanely anti-slash. This certainly had a bit to do with my über-religious upbringing—I just felt like slash didn't belong in Harry Potter. I saw no signs of it in canon; HP was a children's book, really, and any kind of NC-17 fanfiction was just a bit too odd for my liking. Adding gay sex to the mix was just an extra squick.

It's kind of hilarious to look back now.

My (tl;dr) thoughts on yaoi, let me show you them. )

...Whoa, long entry is long. Sorry about that.
christycorr: Merlin and Arthur (Merlin) (Subtext.)
I'm not much of a pet person, but for some reason or another I've had birds, rabbits, cats, dogs, chicks, ducks and fish at different points in life (and an opossum, but not willingly). Of all the above, cats are undoubtedly my favourites.

So I've had [livejournal.com profile] nancy_downs' cat, Felicia, staying over for the past few days while she's out of town. This has provided me with one major source of amusement: some of my friends are terrified of/disgusted by cats, and have gone so far as to squeal and climb the nearest piece of furniture whenever the (tiny, very docile and totally adorable) cat enters the room. *snerk*

Things I Have Learned While Baby-Sitting the Cat )

In other news, I've put together a list of 50 Merlin fic recs for [livejournal.com profile] kirrea. If you've watched the series, check it out! There's a shitload of crack, some angst, some smut, some drama...well, basically, a bit of everything. *grins*

I have not posted here about #amazonfail, Dreamwidth or Susan Boyles. Just for the record: 1) I covered the first one at Twitter on the day of; 2) I'll create a DW account on the 30th, as soon as open beta starts; 3) I have watched the video, I do think her voice is nice, but I honestly don't get why everyone's making such a huge fuss.

Oh, and [livejournal.com profile] afterthree and I are working on a not-very-secret project that we're having some fun planning. Ho hum.
christycorr: The One Ring (The Lord of the Rings) (Obsession.)
Stolen from [livejournal.com profile] neverwiser, because I'm late for class and fuck, now it's raining and oh my God, I'm going to be so late. Also because I'll probably never post a poem on my LJ otherwise, since I tend to abhor the damned things.

Put your MP3 player on shuffle, and write down the first line of the first twenty songs. Post the poem that results. The first line of the twenty-first is the title.

See anything you recognise?

I've been reading quite a bit of Merlin fanfiction lately. If you've seen the show and haven't checked out Drastically Redefining Protocol, Three Tasks and The Crown of the Summer Court, I suggest you do so ASAP. (Well, if you've never seen it, you should still read the first one, because it's AU, and awesome.)
christycorr: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Canon dom!Remus.)
It was updated.

I hate [livejournal.com profile] ladyjaida and [livejournal.com profile] dorkorific for doing this, because honestly? I want more. Now. This part was insanely short, and just just two years man and it was SO GOOD but tiny. *wibble* I hope we don't have to wait another two years. *has cravings* This is so not a good sign.

(Though I certainly will wait two years—gladly—if it means we'll get more after that.)

...

I love [livejournal.com profile] ladyjaida and [livejournal.com profile] dorkorific. Seriously. This update totally made my week. *grins* Month, even.

Also, my deepest apologies to people to whom I barked and/or threatened with a painful, slow death both IRL and via MSN/AIM. It's nothing personal, guys. I just really didn't want to be bothered while I read this. *laughs*

That question meme everyone's been doing )
christycorr: Cheshire cat (Alice in Wonderland) ♥ Unknowable Room.org! (UR.org - we're all mad.)
I had a dream last night in which a fic I loved—either [livejournal.com profile] mistful's Drop Dead Gorgeous or the [livejournal.com profile] shoebox_project; I didn't know which, and this made my dream persona considerably more anxious—had been updated. However, my roommates made our computers crash repeatedly so that I couldn't read the new chapter. Bastards.

Needless to say, I woke up in a sadistic and world-hating mood.

Hourglass Awards results are out! Many of my favourite fics won, which made me very glad; one absence that saddened me a great deal was Map of the Problematique, an excellent drama fic. Oh well.

This year, Hourglass has a Popular Vote cycle! You can hop on over and choose your favourites among this year's winners, which are now divided into two categories: one-shots and multi-chaptered fics. The winners (one per category) will get a special people's choice banner :)

Go on, add your vote to the list! It only takes a few seconds *grins*

...Oh, and this OotP set pic that [livejournal.com profile] _thirty2flavors just sent me is all kinds of awesome.
Tee hee. Check it out!

For some reason, this Shoebox icon post made me all nostalgic. I WANT A NEW CHAPTER, DAMN IT. Yes, [livejournal.com profile] ladyjaida and [livejournal.com profile] dorkorific, I'm glaring at you. *fumes*

I've been spending way too much time at LJ lately. And I've been posting far too often. Is it the memes? It's probably just hanging out with Runi often enough that I see her at LJ every day and because of this I remember to flist. I wonder if I can keep this up once I return to Brazil.

Speaking of memes... Give me something I can make a top five list out of. Anything at all: top five favorite socks, top five favorite smells, or anything you want to know my top five of. The answers will be in my next post.

You know the drill.

Dinosaur

Oct. 9th, 2007 01:46 pm
So I've just finished reading [livejournal.com profile] thegraybook's Draco trilogy for the first time ever. Crazy, eh? I'm probably the only person who has been in the Harry Potter fandom since before the damned thing was published who never got around to reading it.

Due to a bizarre set of circumstances (which start with [livejournal.com profile] sn0rkack IMing me at three AM saying, "Hey, Chris, Cassandra Claire needs someone who speaks Portuguese" and my replying something like, "Interesting. ... Oh, you mean I should actually email her?"), I found myself reading Draco Dormiens/Sinister/Veritas during class for the last couple of days. And now I should go pretend I'd read it ages ago or something, because not knowing these fics is actually a pretty shameful thing. *grins* I blame my deep dislike for Triofic, just for the record; I learned early on that I wasn't into Trio-era, and that is why I never got around to starting DD.

Reading the first chapter of the infamous Ms. Scribe Story (the chapter that sort of explains just who all those people were and how every since Harry Potter fan on the internet somehow has distant roots in HP4GU regardless of when s/he joined the fandom) was a very strange experience for me back on that fateful June 15, 2006. It's very odd to read about something you remember quite well as if it were history, barely remembered or acknowledged by fandom newbies. Most of you guys don't know who Cassandra Claire is. You've never heard of pretty much any of the old BNFs. Our fandom has grown so much that arguably the only two really famous HP fans--the only two people everyone knows--are Melissa-from-TLC and Emerson-from-MuggleNet.

Now that the series is over, I wonder how long it'll take for Harry Potter to be reduced to a slightly less mind-boggling number of fans. If the wanks are to be believed (for the most part, I tend to laugh at wank, but not reeeally believe it), 99% of the fandom has left after HBP, AS/S and/or DH. I wonder when this will actually start to show in numbers all around the internet: number of visitors decreasing, fan sites shutting down, new-fics-per-day ratio at the Pit plummeting... It should be interesting to see.

Forgive the rambling. I don't really know what got into me. I suddenly feel like a very, very strange fandom dinosaur--the sort who started reading L/J back when pretty much no one wrote it, before Tropical Fishy nailed the OP-style love/hate thing in 2000, long before we even knew Lily's surname or house...

Fuck. *laughs* I'm getting old. [livejournal.com profile] rose_pagonias, my dear fellow Pterodactyl, I think I should IM you to feel better about this. *grins*
Choose no life. Choose no career. Choose no family. Choose a fucking big computer.
Choose piles of HP books, cross-referencing, huge SQL queries, hellish coding hours, and electrical coffee makers.
Choose no sleep, high nicotine and mental insurance. Choose no friends.
Choose black jeans and whatever T-shirt. Choose your cosplay in a range of fucking fabrics. Choose PHP and wondering why the fuck you are logged on on a Sunday morning. Choose sitting in that swivel chair looking at mind-boggling, spirit-crushing websites, stuffing fucking junk food into your mouth.
Choose rotting away at the end of it all, pishing your last in some miserable comm, nothing more than an embarrassement to the selfish, fucked-up losers Gates spawned to replace the computer-literate.
Choose your future.
Choose to Potteradmin.

(Slightly adapted from this website, the original source being, of course, the Trainspotting monologue. So true. *grins*)

Oho, iTunes Plus, y'all. I'm curious to see where Apple's going with this.

You know you're too used to concrit when you read this and sympathise.

New pictures of OotP, including Lily! Hm. I have a feeling this movie--Snape's Worst Memory, in particular--will disappoint me so, so much.

-> Fic rec: Anyone who's ever enjoyed The Colbert Report should totally read this crossover.

*whistles* *glances at HP fandom* The wank goes ever on and on... (Fandom_wank's oh-so-robust servers will not survive Deathly Hallows. It will be so, so sad.)

Important!

Inspired by recent events (see wank mentioned above), [livejournal.com profile] fandom_counts is a community that wants to count how many LJ users belong to whatever fandoms. Go ahead, join and pimp!! Paid users should go check out [livejournal.com profile] fandompays, too.

Edit again: Aja loses it. *giggles* My God. This wank is pretty damn historic. Aaaand the shit hits the fan (read: the press).

I've just had dental surgery. It's an interesting experience, the fact that my face looks like a crooked balloon notwithstanding. Yay cold soup for five days!

I've just uploaded a new chapter. Isn't it ironic? I haven't touched a computer in several days, and it's my most productive week (fic-wise) since January. I wouldn't say I'm actually proud of this new Hopelessly Addicted. It still is, after all, the same old story, with several clichés I can't really avoid. But at least it's better than the first version! ^^

By the way, I've just read U2 at the End of the World. What took me so long, I wonder?

Also, Neil Gaiman's Sandman rocks. I need to get my hands on more. I have to finish V for Vendetta and A History of Violence, too.

Happy belated 4th of July, Americans.

Oh, and poor Portuguese. It was obvious that Germany was going to win, though.
