christycorr: Mr. Darcy (Pride and Prejudice) (Fanfiction is difficult!)
Thank you so much for participating in this year's Yuletide! I hope you didn't hate my requests on sight—rest assured I'll adore anything you write based on the characters I asked for. I'm not hard to please, promise :D

So, in general:

I adore: good characterisation, AUs of any kind (and crossovers! Love those!), excessive UST, witty banter, clever characters actually being clever, complex plots, sarcasm, open relationships and/or interesting poly dynamics, awesome female characters, geeky references of any kind, drunkenness, domesticity, adultery and kidfic. [you can find fics I love at my pinboard account, if you wish]

I really, really dislike: the word "lover" (seriously, I cannot stress this enough), "making love," "cum," character bashing, graphic non-con. I'm also not a big fan of incest.

If you want to write any of these as an AU or a crossover, I'll absolutely love it ♥

Now, on to the specific prompts: )

I know very well that optional details are optional, Mystery Writer, and once again, rest assured that I'll greatly enjoy your fic, no matter what you choose to write! Feel free to depart from my requests if a stray plot bunny leads you astray—I won't mind one bit! :D

Once again, thank you so much for this! ♥ ♥

Dear Sailor,

Hi! First of all, thank you so much for writing this for me. This is my first year taking part in [community profile] 3_ships, and I'm very excited!

In case you want to know more about my likes and dislikes, here's a list to guide you:

These are a few of my favourite things: AUs of any kind (and crossovers), open relationships and/or interesting poly dynamics, excessive UST, witty banter, clever characters actually being clever, sarcasm, awesome female characters, geeky references of any kind, drunkenness, domesticity, adultery, kidfic, and, in the case of XMFC, telepathy and characters using their powers irresponsibly/casually.

Things I really, really dislike: "lover," "making love," "cum," character bashing, graphic non-con.

If you want, you can browse my pinboard to check out the kind of fics I enjoy the most.

Feel free to leave an anon comment here (or send my friend [livejournal.com profile] firstlightofeos a message, if that suits you better) if you have anything to ask! :D

And once again, thank you so, so much! ♥

christycorr: Dr. Horrible (Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog) (Coming along.)
The following links are some of the many, many reasons why I've been going, "Jesus, I'd kill to be at Comic-Con" for the past couple of days, thanks to Twitter and the (admittedly far too many) geeks Twitter users I happen to follow.

(On the very, very bright side, [livejournal.com profile] firstlightofeos, [livejournal.com profile] moon_dancing, [livejournal.com profile] afterthree, [livejournal.com profile] oxys_kai_moros, [livejournal.com profile] nancy_downs, [livejournal.com profile] inksplotched and I have made plans to attend next year's Comic-Con together, which will be all kinds of brilliant!)

I'm excited for Iron Man 2 and Avatar and Fringe and of course the next two (:D!) Star Trek movies and oh God, watching Comic-Con news from afar is short-circuiting my obsessive brain. There's way too much geekery out there I want to watch. Crap.

Links: Comic-Con costumes, Russell T. Davies, Firefly, Dollhouse, The Cabin in the Woods, The Guild, V, Chuck, True Blood, Twilight, Twitter )

Star Trek: SEE 'Make Kirk/Spock Canon' petition. I pretty much fully agree with [livejournal.com profile] sunhawk's thoughts on the matter, so I'll just sit here in my quiet internet corner and headdesk away.

Star Trek: Reboot fic recs of the must-read variety: We Reach Our Apogee Slowly by [livejournal.com profile] kowaiyoukai (Spock/Uhura, Kirk/Spock pre-slash, WIP), You'll Get There in the End (It Just Takes a While) by [livejournal.com profile] seperis (Kirk/Spock), Don't Last Like the Feeling by [livejournal.com profile] anowlinsunshine (Spock/Uhura, Kirk/Spock), Common Bond by [personal profile] florahart (Sarek/Winona). Also, [personal profile] rageprufrock's D: (RPS, Chris/Zach). Yes. I know. It's RPS. Shut up. [For more ST:TOR recs, click here.]

Incidentally, I neglected to make a Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince reaction post, despite my promise to [personal profile] afterthree that I would, so here's the gist of what I would've said: the movie was hilarious; I still don't like Gambon's Dumbledore; I enjoyed a lot of the movie, but the last third of it or so were just plain painful. I wasn't a big fan of the cave scene or Dumbledore's death. This wasn't my favourite movie, but it wasn't the worst of the batch. In a word: meh. EDIT: [livejournal.com profile] cleolinda has said it best in her Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince in 15 Minutes, really. Heeee.

Ending on a random note, in case any of you somehow missed this link in the past few days, click to watch Never Gonna Give Your Teen Spirit Up, or: Rick-Rolling, Nirvana-style.
I spent the last few days judging Romance and NC-17 fics for the Hourglass Awards. Two things:

1) I'm astonished at how normal most of the sex in Harry Potter fanfiction is. Sure, there are plenty of squicky/strange/Squid-related fics out there, but for the most part it's just very, very normal sex, with the occasional contraceptive charm or conjured lube or simply misused motor oil. After spending the last few weeks immersed in pon farr/touch telepathy fic, it all just seems insanely straightforward. Not that it's a bad thing or anything, but I kept half-waiting for people to meld, or someone's eyes to turn golden and make shit explode.

2) I dislike most sappy NC-17 fics, but good God, overly sappy Sirius/Remus fics annoy me more than sap in pretty much any other ship. I don't mean the cute, clichéd, shit-we-had-inadvisable-drunken-sex-and-I-realised-I've-been-in-love-with-you-all-along kind; it's the "I wuv you, Siri-poo" ones that make me want to claw my fucking eyes out. Ugh.

I'm ridiculously excited for U2's new tour—their first concert was full of hiccoughs (e.g. they failed spectacularly at One and With or Without You, which they've been playing for years), but they seem to have sorted themselves out, and things are looking good! They even played Electrical Storm twice! (Well, except for that godawful I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight remix. What are they thinking?)

I'm on holidays, which is totally brilliant :D I'm in São Paulo for the HBP release, and I've been hanging out with friends whom I rarely see, so yay!

Gah. I've been reading too much Harry Potter fic. I miss Star Trek and Merlin. *twitches* Withdrawal. Seriously. God, this is sad.

In other news, I'm completely in love with the icon I used to make this post.
christycorr: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Merlin's saggy left--)
When you see this, post five seven unpopular fandom opinions in your journal.

1. [Doctor Who] I adore Steven Moffat and all his DW episodes (except for the fourth season two-parter, because no amount of fangirlism can get me to appreciate River), so I'm actually curious to see what he'll do with Eleven. I'll miss Tennant like hell, but I'll definitely give the next series a chance.

2. [Torchwood] I hate Torchwood. I've watched several episodes, and I should like it, really—I love Jack, and James Marsters was in it, even, I should've been all over that, but...no. The team fails, and even Jack fails, and Owen fails, and Gwen fails oh God, so hard, and the plotlines are ridiculous, and they're all amazingly inefficient and terrible at their jobs, and just, what the hell were you high on when you allowed this to happen, RTD?

Harry Potter, Star Trek, Merlin, et al. )

I signed up to write two [livejournal.com profile] reel_merlin fics: Laws of Attraction and Imagine Me & You. *headdesk* I think it's a masochism thing. But hey, I have until September—I may actually finish them, who knows?

Oh, and just because it's being debated everywhere: Michael Jackson died. The rumour outbreak broke the internet—including, but not limited to, LJ, Twitter, E! and CNN. I'm pretty sure [livejournal.com profile] ohnotheydidnt did the LJ-breaking; the comm was inaccessible for a while before the whole site crashed down. Damn, I really wanted to read people's comments on the matter. Way to go, ONTD!

I feel sorry for the bazillion people who bought tickets for his 'This Is It' 2010 tour, anyhow. The man's musical talent was respect-worthy regardless of personal taste, even if his private life was a godawful mess.

This meme is making me realise how little fandom-variety there is in my LJ icons. This is most distressing :|

christycorr: Tenth Doctor (Doctor Who) (This is how I roll.)
I'm a big fan of character-driven fiction. It's not that I think plot is unimportant, but it's secondary—a plot has to be truly dazzling to make me ignore severely underdeveloped characters. (Lord of the Rings anyone?)

So yeah, character-centric > plot-centric. This applies to movies, TV series, books, fanfiction, you name it. I'd take Closer over Catch Me If You Can (and Havemercy over City of Bones, and Dexter over Alias, and Drop Dead Gorgeous over Draco Sinister) any day. Shit, I just fandom-dated myself really badly by mentioning that fic, didn't I.

By 'character-centric,' I don't mean plotless—it's mostly that the plot exists to push along the character development, and not the other way around.

Issues of the Week, BSG, genfic and Dollhouse )

Just to clarify, I don't consider 'plot-driven' an insult or anything. Nevertheless, I do believe bad writers don't try to write character-centric stories nearly as often as they do plot-driven ones (maybe it's easier to settle for the latter, because plot-driven fiction is the norm, and to part with that you need a firmer crafting hand, to have at least some idea of what you're doing? I'm not sure).

...And then Stephenie Meyer comes along with a primarily character-driven universe that has little to no plot or character development for at least 70% of any given book in the series, and I...I don't even know what to do with that.

Anyhow! I've rambled on for long enough. Do any of you guys have a preference? Is this a distinction that matters to you—in published fiction, fanfiction, or TV?

(Unrelated: Geek pride ftw!)
christycorr: Cheshire cat (Alice in Wonderland) ♥ Unknowable Room.org! (UR.org - we're all mad.)
Hey, Harry Potter fandom!

Do you have any great fic recs? This year's cycle of Unknowable Room's Hourglass Awards is well underway! Head on over to nominate your favourite fics—any era, any ship, any format.

If you're feeling particularly fandom-loving, you should definitely volunteer to judge a category or two, too! It's great fun :D

PSA now done, I'll go back to emailing the nominees we've already received. Yay, only 120 emails to go! *grins* Oh, the joys of fic-archive-adminning!
christycorr: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Canon dom!Remus.)
When I first joined the Harry Potter fandom, I was kind of insanely anti-slash. This certainly had a bit to do with my über-religious upbringing—I just felt like slash didn't belong in Harry Potter. I saw no signs of it in canon; HP was a children's book, really, and any kind of NC-17 fanfiction was just a bit too odd for my liking. Adding gay sex to the mix was just an extra squick.

It's kind of hilarious to look back now.

My (tl;dr) thoughts on yaoi, let me show you them. )

...Whoa, long entry is long. Sorry about that.
christycorr: Merlin and Arthur (Merlin) (Subtext.)
I'm not much of a pet person, but for some reason or another I've had birds, rabbits, cats, dogs, chicks, ducks and fish at different points in life (and an opossum, but not willingly). Of all the above, cats are undoubtedly my favourites.

So I've had [livejournal.com profile] nancy_downs' cat, Felicia, staying over for the past few days while she's out of town. This has provided me with one major source of amusement: some of my friends are terrified of/disgusted by cats, and have gone so far as to squeal and climb the nearest piece of furniture whenever the (tiny, very docile and totally adorable) cat enters the room. *snerk*

Things I Have Learned While Baby-Sitting the Cat )

In other news, I've put together a list of 50 Merlin fic recs for [livejournal.com profile] kirrea. If you've watched the series, check it out! There's a shitload of crack, some angst, some smut, some drama...well, basically, a bit of everything. *grins*

I have not posted here about #amazonfail, Dreamwidth or Susan Boyles. Just for the record: 1) I covered the first one at Twitter on the day of; 2) I'll create a DW account on the 30th, as soon as open beta starts; 3) I have watched the video, I do think her voice is nice, but I honestly don't get why everyone's making such a huge fuss.

Oh, and [livejournal.com profile] afterthree and I are working on a not-very-secret project that we're having some fun planning. Ho hum.
christycorr: Tenth Doctor (Doctor Who) (*?*)
Okay, so "Albus Severus Potter" is a hilarious name. And "Lily Luna Potter" is pretty sad. But ... come on, Ronald Bilius, anyone? Ginevra Molly? As a rule, characters in Potterverse have tragic middle names, and no one bothered complaining about this (much) before. Why did DH make people start caring?

(As for Charlie not getting married because he loved dragons too much... well, apparently every family has an Aberforth. After all, Charlie was the one who found out Norberta's true gender...)

I love it that JKR keeps telling us stuff, I do, but... I kind of miss the times when she'd give us information that I truly liked getting (i.e. Marauder-related). Psh. I don't give a damn about second-gen; why can't she tell us more about MWPPL? *laughs* But ah well. It's all good, anyway. And I really liked the PotterCast interview! Some bits of it were rather interesting.

In other news, I seem to have rediscovered my love for Tetris thanks to the Tetris Facebook app. It's insanely time consuming, but ohh, so relaxing.

New Year's is in two days, and I'm not entirely ready to see my neighbourhood exploding with the millions of people who come here to watch the fireworks every year. Gah.

Also, the fic exchange is driving me insane (yep, more so than usual), slowly but surely. *cries* Check out the fics you haven't already, though; most of them are pretty awesome.
...It's 9 AM and I'm not at college. *looks mutinous* It's my birthday, and I'll skip class if I want to!

And now, like Sara, I'll make a Christmas wish list, just like last year.

Dinosaur

Oct. 9th, 2007 01:46 pm
So I've just finished reading [livejournal.com profile] thegraybook's Draco trilogy for the first time ever. Crazy, eh? I'm probably the only person who has been in the Harry Potter fandom since before the damned thing was published who never got around to reading it.

Due to a bizarre set of circumstances (which start with [livejournal.com profile] sn0rkack IMing me at three AM saying, "Hey, Chris, Cassandra Claire needs someone who speaks Portuguese" and my replying something like, "Interesting. ... Oh, you mean I should actually email her?"), I found myself reading Draco Dormiens/Sinister/Veritas during class for the last couple of days. And now I should go pretend I'd read it ages ago or something, because not knowing these fics is actually a pretty shameful thing. *grins* I blame my deep dislike for Triofic, just for the record; I learned early on that I wasn't into Trio-era, and that is why I never got around to starting DD.

Reading the first chapter of the infamous Ms. Scribe Story (the chapter that sort of explains just who all those people were and how every since Harry Potter fan on the internet somehow has distant roots in HP4GU regardless of when s/he joined the fandom) was a very strange experience for me back on that fateful June 15, 2006. It's very odd to read about something you remember quite well as if it were history, barely remembered or acknowledged by fandom newbies. Most of you guys don't know who Cassandra Claire is. You've never heard of pretty much any of the old BNFs. Our fandom has grown so much that arguably the only two really famous HP fans--the only two people everyone knows--are Melissa-from-TLC and Emerson-from-MuggleNet.

Now that the series is over, I wonder how long it'll take for Harry Potter to be reduced to a slightly less mind-boggling number of fans. If the wanks are to be believed (for the most part, I tend to laugh at wank, but not reeeally believe it), 99% of the fandom has left after HBP, AS/S and/or DH. I wonder when this will actually start to show in numbers all around the internet: number of visitors decreasing, fan sites shutting down, new-fics-per-day ratio at the Pit plummeting... It should be interesting to see.

Forgive the rambling. I don't really know what got into me. I suddenly feel like a very, very strange fandom dinosaur--the sort who started reading L/J back when pretty much no one wrote it, before Tropical Fishy nailed the OP-style love/hate thing in 2000, long before we even knew Lily's surname or house...

Fuck. *laughs* I'm getting old. [livejournal.com profile] rose_pagonias, my dear fellow Pterodactyl, I think I should IM you to feel better about this. *grins*
Critics seem to like 'Stardust'! I'm happy for Neil Gaiman :) Time to get the book out of the shelf and go to the movies soon-ish, I believe.

Speaking of Gaiman, this short video of Jonathan Ross kissing Neil Gaiman at Comic-Con is hilarious. Also, this quote is awesome (from his blog):

"Writing a novel is a voyage of discovery," said Neil Gaiman, who has written piles of them (including "American Gods," "Anansi Boys," and "Neverwhere") and sold millions.

But turning a novel into a film is like "running a very sharp-edged maze leading through a minefield, with people shooting at you, in a freezing downpour, having no sense of where the exit might be, pursued by hounds, while blindfolded."

Ooh! I have a new MacBook. It is black and gorgeous, but it will only be delivered in a couple of weeks, for some evil reason.

Jesse Spencer (Chase) and Jennifer Morrison (Cameron), House co-stars, called off their engagement. Oh noes. And then of course the House fandom wanks.

UR was down for a couple of days, and not once did I consider posting at LJ. Hm. I started a couple of new poke wars on Facebook, too. Speaking of which! Feel free to add me on Facebook if you have it; I made an account a couple of weeks ago :)

Hmm. It seems like our fandom took BoldThrough (crappy! name!) very seriously... So people seem to be migrating over to JournalFen/GreatestJournal/InsaneJournal. Just for the record, I have accounts everywhere (JF, GJ, IJ), have had them for a while, never planned to use them (well, I use JF to comment at fandom_wank, but that's all), and still don't. Really, really don't.

Chocoholic squirrel, wtf. Oh, and ew.
[livejournal.com profile] ponderosa121 and [livejournal.com profile] elaboration were suspended from LJ for drawing NC-17 fanart involving possibly underage Harry. People are pissed. It's almost Strikethrough '07 again ... except ... the banned names don't show up striked when you type them. As you can see above, they show up in bold instead.

Did you foolishly believe our fandom couldn't come up with titles crappier than Strikethrough '07? Psh. Think again. This is the fandom of "Pumpkin Pie", "Wotcher Wolvie", "Snarry", "Fire and Ice", "Puppy Love"!

I give you--Bold '07. *snerk*

...

*yawns* This mess bores me already, and it's hardly begun. Just thought I should mention it here in case someone wants to, y'know, hoist the colours or something of the sort.

I'm sure it's important etc., but there are other people (plenty of other people) willing to wank in my place. So go ahead and cat macro them to hell and back, y'all. *waves*

My flist is quiet. [livejournal.com profile] fandom_wank is quiet (server robustness notwithstanding). The last post at [livejournal.com profile] its_a_fake was made by someone who read the book and liked it. The only person I'm IMing with is [livejournal.com profile] firstlightofeos, who is waiting in line for the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. It is, I believe, time to make the mandatory "life as I know it is over" post--before everyone starts squeeing, complaining or ranting even more.

Not that long, really, but it's DH night and everyone will make huge posts, so I'll try to spare your flists a few paragraphs. No spoilers, by the way. )

So... yeah. Shut up, fandom, for once in your bloody existence. The book was amazing. We will all survive, honestly. Those of you who omg!loathed it can go write your ASS-fic and your denial!fic. Or just leave, if you so wish. The rest of us will stay, and leave someday too, and that won't matter to JK or anything, now will it?

I'll just sit back and watch the wankage until I grow bored of it (which I will, because ship wars are inherently repetitive and boring). And then I'll go write and read DH-based (yay!) Marauder-era fanfiction, because that's the reason I got to where I am in the first place.

Edit Oh! Damn. I forgot to add the no-mores!

No more waiting in line for a new Potter book.
No more reading a new Potter book for the first time.
No more searching frantically for spoilers or reading badly-photographed leaks.
No more waiting anxiously for any small clue hidden in a half-sentence of JKR's in an interview.
No more memorising a whole new chapter list to make bloody citations (*winks at [livejournal.com profile] dianaprallon*)
No more despairing at the thought of an entire new book to add to the wiki.
No more worrying about UR spoiler systems or spoiler warnings or anything of the sort (*thanks [livejournal.com profile] discreetly profusely*)
No more panicking about possible hacks of the UR address like the one that happened with HBP.
No more anxiety attacks or comforting friends having anxiety attacks over the upcoming book.

All in all ... maybe it's not even that bad. :D
"Three hours. This is it - ground zero. Would you like to say a few words to mark the occasion?"

Aaaaah gah. Ugh. Yeah. Well said, Tyler Durden.

I ... I can't think of anything. I'm three hours away from holding THE book. Three hours away from realising I've read it, I've finished; I will never again wait in line for another Potter book. There will never again be another Potter book.

Oh, God. *tries to breathe*

I could be all, "to the well-organised mind, this is but the next adventure" but FUCK NO. AGH. I don't want the books to be over. *tear*!

Okay.

Okay.

*takes a deep breath*

I'm going back to the bookshop now. [livejournal.com profile] nancy_downs, [livejournal.com profile] _isarma_ and [livejournal.com profile] magnun have been waiting for me for a while. I just came to the hotel to charge my laptop.

Okay. I'm off. Good luck, everyone, and I'll talk to some of you in a bit over three hours. With the book. *dies* :)
  • The ten-million-pound security surrounding Harry Potter
Putting The Da Vince Code against this book is like putting a bungalow next to the Great Pyramids.

  • Israeli bookshops and selling Deathly Hallows halfway through the Shabbat
Aside from the book and its poor content, which serves as education for teenagers in Israel and the world in this new age, the book chains add insult to injury with their intent to hold this celebration while massively desecrating the Shabbat, and by violating the law that prohibits employing workers on Shabbat.

  • Bloomsbury lawyers try to plug Potter leaks
Whether or not Harry Potter has died is not something we can reveal - but it does look very much like he has leaked.

  • Potter book has leaked
Despite a massive security operation, the final book of the Harry Potter series has been leaked online three days before its worldwide release.

Hm. I'm guessing it is real, then. Excellent!

I'm leaving for São Paulo in a couple of hours! :)
  • The wank has begun [spoilers in the link, beware]. Over DH spoilers, naturally, over the leak, mostly, and above all about the bloody epilogue.

Ship wars! I haven't seen the flames this high since HBP (that was a riot). Honestly, I thought the age of ship wars had somewhat passed, since most ships were hinted at in HBP, but noooo. The Potter fandom crazies have striked again! Yayness!

[livejournal.com profile] worstangel and I had been complaining about the lack of wank regarding the leak. I am now satisfied. The Potterdämmerung will be so awesome. Fandom will explode. HEEE. [livejournal.com profile] spoil_me_dh is already enormously wanky and wonderful (and so is its hellspawn, [livejournal.com profile] its_a_fake), but ... I can't wait for Friday. Again. And now also for entirely other reasons.

Alas, most of the best quotes are related to spoilers, so I won't post them. Meh.

(If anyone wants to know, here is a pretty tidy list of the main spoilers.)
