christycorr: Barney Stinson (How I Met Your Mother) (Woe.)
The internet's all over this—every tech site worth its salt has a huge obituary for Steve Jobs, and a shitload of people are mourning, be it for his work at Apple, or Pixar, or his status as an innovator, or just as a human being a lot of people admired.

I haven't got much to say on the subject, but I made the switch to Apple at a point in my life where everything about me changed—my outlook on life, my attitude towards school, my friends, my apartment, my reading habits, my sexual orientation, my religion, everything. Sure, Apple's marketing is just that good and basically every Macmaniac loves to gush about how it's more than a brand, and I don't know about the others, but—to me, it really, really is.

Apple is a symbol of a lot I grew to love, and of how far I've come as a person since I was a young didn't-know-better PC user. Apple is my first lasting friendships; the first time I fell in love; my first roommates. Apple is Harry Potter, and alcohol, and cigarettes, and cardplaying all-nighters. Apple is growing up, and learning, and loving.

So...thank you, Steve. Rest in peace ♥

Mandatory linkage: CNN's excellent list of Steve Jobs' top 5 showman moments
christycorr: Richard Castle (Castle) (*^^*)
All right, so I fail at updating LJ! Damn you, Twitter. I went to a U2 concert in Tampa with [livejournal.com profile] firstlightofeos and [personal profile] lu a couple of weeks ago, and it was brilliant. I went to New York right after that, where I bought far more DVDs and assorted geekeries than I ought to and ate really, really good Chinese takeout. I totally fell in love with the city. ♥ And I bought a new MacBook Pro! It is gorgeous. I've just finished setting her up to my satisfaction today. Her name is River. (After River Tam, obviously, not River Song. And damn you for even considering that possibility, [personal profile] oxymora.)

TV-related rambling ahead! But first, tell me something. [LJ poll]

vague spoilers for Glee, Dollhouse and Merlin )

Three TV shows I'm watching and enjoying—with download links, because everyone knows I'm a pimp at heart:
  • Castle: Nathan Fillion playing the part of a Fillion-y mystery writer who helps solve crimes; what's not to love? I'm enjoying season 2 even more than I did season 1, and I'm happily waiting for my copy of Richard Castle's Heat Wave to arrive. Here's a YouTube promo featuring Fillion being awesome and geeky. Download the Castle pilot in .avi format here.

  • FlashForward: the premise is interesting—the entire world blanked out for 2 minutes and 17 seconds, causing massive casualties, and during that time everyone caught a glimpse of what their lives would be like six months from now. The main character saw himself investigating the blackouts, so he begins investigating; it's all very wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey. Also: there's John Cho! And Jack Davenport! YouTube promo link. Download the FlashForward pilot in .avi format here. (Hulu link.)

  • White Collar: I was excited to see Chuck's Matthew Bomer (Bryce Larkin) in a new show; it just premiered two days ago, and it didn't disappoint. [Incidentally, if you aren't watching Chuck, why the hell aren't you watching Chuck?] Bomer plays a con artist who helps investigate white collar crimes to keep himself out of jail, à la Catch Me If You Can. It's entertaining! Check out the YouTube promo, and download the first episode here in .avi format (or watch on Hulu).

  • I'm also watching, with varying degrees of dedication, enthusiasm and caught-up-ness: Dexter, Fringe, Heroes, How I Met Your Mother, Lie to Me, Numb3rs, Criminal Minds, Stargate: Universe, Supernatural and The Mentalist. I have a terrible case of television ADD—I rarely remember/want to watch shows' new episodes every week—so everything always piles up. *guilty look at Heroes, Criminal Minds and Fringe* *headdesk*
The new U2 album, No Line on the Horizon, was leaked two weeks early and I have it and oh my God it's AWESOME. I've been squeeing with [livejournal.com profile] firstlightofeos for a while now. I'm ridiculously happy right now. *dances*!

My poor roommates will have to live through two months of me listening to this on repeat every single day. Oh well. Sorry, guys. I feel bad for you, I do, but...yeah.

There's a verse in Unknown Caller that goes "Force-quit, and move to Trash." I'm so amused. ("Force quit" is Mac-speak for "control-alt-del.") *snerk*

Also, there's a track called Magnificent—a word that in and of itself reminds me of Donna Noble—and it starts something like this: I was born to be with you / In the space and time / After that, and ever after / I haven't had a clue. It cracked me up. Okay, so maybe it's 'this' space and time or whatever, maybe I misheard it, but it still made me laugh a great deal *grins*

[livejournal.com profile] afterthree gave me five topics to ramble about, so I'll get to that before I forget.

Comment on this post and I will give you five subjects/things I associate with you. Then post this in your LJ and elaborate on the subjects given.

I've done a somewhat decent job of controlling myself these past few weeks. I've been to the big Apple store in Palo Alto several times, but I hardly ever bought anything. I always knew that I'd end up doing some kind of significant purchase there the week before I left and—er. Yes. Just got back to the hotel.

In Neil Gaiman's Sandman, Morpheus' big sister is Death. Considering that this is also my favourite Terry Pratchett character, I will name the new black MacBook Death. *laughs* And it'll totally speak in small caps.

Morpheus, my current MacBook, will pass on to [livejournal.com profile] plasticiner. Considering that I've also bought a Time Capsule and a bazillion other small Apple things, Vertigo will look like an Apple store more than ever now :D

As requested by Runi, my top 5 Apple products )
Stephenie Meyer is currently number one on the poll for Time's list of most influential people this past year. Oh dear God. Please click on the link above and give people below her a fighting chance—Twilight fans seem to have undertaken the task to get her to the top, and it's just...*facepalms repeatedly* No. Wrong. It's Harry Potter: Best Animated Independent Foreign Language Documentary all over again. Only worse.

Go ahead, give Meyer the '1' she deserves. *nudges*

Also, here are some ideas of people you may want to give high ratings to:
  • Stephen Colbert (naturally);
  • Jon Stewart (obviously *fangirls*);
  • Steve Jobs, Apple CEO (because I adore him, and I'm currently minutes away from his house);
  • Bono (because I had to);
  • Jimbo Wales, creator of Wikipedia (because you all know I secretly have an altar at home where I make daily sacrifices to him);
  • Al Gore (because he's cool).

There are several other in/famous people, of course, from Amy Winehouse to Nelson Mandela. Take your pick. But *fumes* not Stephenie Meyer. Edit: Oh look, people agree with me *grins*

Speaking of which, I read the Twilight series this week. It was every bit as awful and cringe-worthy as everyone told me it would be, and also highly entertaining. At least now I can follow (and contribute to) the constant debates at UR with [livejournal.com profile] _thirty2flavors, [livejournal.com profile] inksplotched, [livejournal.com profile] callmepatsy and others.

In my last post, I asked for top 5 lists; I will try to post some of them in every post from now on.

Five ships and the songs I associate with them, as requested by Liz, with download links )

So... that ended up being ridiculously long. Plus, it took me a while to upload all the songs, so I won't do any more top 5 lists tonight. I promise the next ones will be briefer *laughs* And oh look, in the time it took me to finish this post, Rain got the #1 spot from Meyer, by a small margin. This probably isn't cause for celebration, though *grins*

[livejournal.com profile] moon_dancing arrives tomorrow! *bounces*

ETA, April 14th Stephen Colbert is #1, and Jon Stewart is #2! Smeyer's been kicked to the 39th spot. Brilliant.

    - Make a post (including the meme info) and talk about the icons I chose.
    - Other people can then comment to you and make their own posts.
    - This will create a never-ending cycle of icon squee. Whoo!

It took me too long to stop to write this post, so I ended up with three sets of icons. *facepalm* Right. Sorry for the length.

    MacBook

My shiny new black MacBook has finally arrived! It is sleek and gorgeous.

I haven't decided what to name him yet. Bah. I want to honour my HP obsession, but I read The Kindly Ones last night and my Sandman love has been rekindled; I may call him Morpheus. Plus, it's a nice tribute to my old Matrix obsession.

(And the Dream King totally deserves it. He's so awesome.)

    Oh, decisions, decisions...

*glances at MacBook* Fine. I've made up my mind.

Welcome to the family, Morpheus. *hugs* I hope you get along well with Marvin, Aziraphale and Macphisto. And your lesser cousins (ew, PCs) Crowley and Echelon. :D

And now I'm off to format Morpheus and re-install OS X and related apps (like hell I'd leave the (Portuguese) installation made by those incompetents at the non-Apple-exclusive store run on my baby). Ta!
Critics seem to like 'Stardust'! I'm happy for Neil Gaiman :) Time to get the book out of the shelf and go to the movies soon-ish, I believe.

Speaking of Gaiman, this short video of Jonathan Ross kissing Neil Gaiman at Comic-Con is hilarious. Also, this quote is awesome (from his blog):

"Writing a novel is a voyage of discovery," said Neil Gaiman, who has written piles of them (including "American Gods," "Anansi Boys," and "Neverwhere") and sold millions.

But turning a novel into a film is like "running a very sharp-edged maze leading through a minefield, with people shooting at you, in a freezing downpour, having no sense of where the exit might be, pursued by hounds, while blindfolded."

Ooh! I have a new MacBook. It is black and gorgeous, but it will only be delivered in a couple of weeks, for some evil reason.

Jesse Spencer (Chase) and Jennifer Morrison (Cameron), House co-stars, called off their engagement. Oh noes. And then of course the House fandom wanks.

UR was down for a couple of days, and not once did I consider posting at LJ. Hm. I started a couple of new poke wars on Facebook, too. Speaking of which! Feel free to add me on Facebook if you have it; I made an account a couple of weeks ago :)

Hmm. It seems like our fandom took BoldThrough (crappy! name!) very seriously... So people seem to be migrating over to JournalFen/GreatestJournal/InsaneJournal. Just for the record, I have accounts everywhere (JF, GJ, IJ), have had them for a while, never planned to use them (well, I use JF to comment at fandom_wank, but that's all), and still don't. Really, really don't.

Chocoholic squirrel, wtf. Oh, and ew.
I have a new iPod U2 Special Edition. It is gorgeous!

I start working at the bank tomorrow. I wish I could explain the strange mixture of feelings I'm experiencing: the odd sensation that I will never have holidays again, the certainty that a new phase of my life is about to begin, the excitement of getting a job at a place where I've always wanted to work... It's weird. Hm.

Does anyone here use GoogleTalk? I've started doing so a lot more lately.

My iPod broke down. It's so sad. =/

Also, Prison Break kicks ass. *grins* Yay new series addiction!

Next on my to-watch list: Grey's Anatomy. People say it's great. I sort of hope not--I've still got heaps of new series to finish--, except that, you know, not really.
It's incredible. Every time I flist, there's a meme to be done. Amazing! *grins*

I tag: Nai ([livejournal.com profile] paradoxo_mental), Ash ([livejournal.com profile] worstangel), Runi ([livejournal.com profile] firstlightofeos), Arch ([livejournal.com profile] ladyofmasbolle), Anne ([livejournal.com profile] toasterobsessed), Anna ([livejournal.com profile] pink_pudding), Patricia ([livejournal.com profile] cherrychalk), Titou ([livejournal.com profile] titou_moony).

Tomorrow's a holiday in Brazil! \o/ It's raining; I'll hide here with some three or four movies to watch. =)

I've been getting strange plot bunnies... starting one one-shot per day... *blinks* I've... learned to enjoy writing again.

Oh yes, and the next chapter of Hopelessly Addicted is ready and beta-ed.

    *will go upload it now*

    SQUEE!

    Jun. 26th, 2005 02:12 am
I've been oddly hyper these days -- a lot more than usual.

My new iBook and iPod are simply prettiful.

The TGB mods are the most lovable girls EVER. *huggles*

    Lu's coming to Rio.

(I technically still have to hand in a couple of papers, but--)

    Holidaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaays!
I really am spamming flists, am I not? (You could say I have far too much free time, but the truth is that I just procrastinate waaay too much.)

One very nice meme I found in my archive:

[[It's long, but worth it. Give it a try!]]

    Fandoms are relationships meme )

So, it's official. I belong to the real Dark Side now: I bought an iBook. *spazzes*

The transition's a bit painful (and Runi isn't even online, *tear*), but I'll survive.

And I love it already. Oh so very much.

Now, as soon as I get MP3s in this one, I'll put them in my new iPod mini and SQUEE holidays rock (even though mine haven't really started yet, I can already feel the thrill).
My Latin test was so perfect! \o/ I wish it had been longer. I finished way too fast. *grins* Now, I'll only get back to the language in August, which seems terribly far away. I'm not complaining, of course -- I'm just saying that I'll miss the classes (and, strangely enough, my teacher's finger-pointing, asking us to declens/translate instantly).

Civil Law was... scarily ridiculous. If I don't ace that test, I'll throw myself out some window. French... *le sigh* I was exhausted and didn't even proofread. I just know this DELF grade will suck, but I don't think I'll fail. (I hope not, at least.) Oral A6 tomorrow.

And, you know, since I do love memes -- here's an old one that most of you have already done (this time, I got it from [livejournal.com profile] firstlightofeos):

What You Really Think Of Your Friends

    Runi is your soulmate.
    You truly love Kelly.
You consider Lu your true friend.
You know that Arch is always thinking of you.
You'll remember Ash for the rest of your life.
You secretly think Rê is creative, charming, and a bit too dramatic at times.
You secretly think that Anna is colorful, impulsive, and a total risk taker.
You secretly think that Dede is loyal and trustworthy to you. And that Dede changes lovers faster than underwear.
You secretly think Holly is shy and nonconfrontational. And that Holly has a hidden internet romance.

Random note: I'm getting an iBook tomorrow! *dances*

Studying International Law now. It's 11PM, and I'm about to start, yay. ~see y'all tomorrow. Once more, with freedom! _o/\o_

ETA It's official. The Supreme Court's gone mad. Seriously, WTF?
